Educators believe that students are a product of their individual school systems. Chesapeake public schools hold students to the highest standards and expectations. From elementary school to high school, students are expected to achieve to their highest potential not only academically, but athletically as well. The teachers have high standards because they are among the best in the area. As a product of Chesapeake public schools, I lived up to those expectations thanks to one teacher.

Honors World history was taught one particular teacher, Ms.Brown. Because of the amount of students in the honors program, Ms. Brown was the only teacher that taught this class. In her class, she expected current events to be done weekly and projects to be completed on time. Besides teaching us, Ms. Brown was also the cheerleading and dance team coach. As a cheerleader, I was expected to perform and conduct myself much better than the others in my class because my coach was my teacher. In her class, Ms. Brown taught us about life lessons and how they tied into history. Before taking her class, history seemed boring, but she made students want to learn not only in the classroom but to play sports as well.

As an adult, I have taken what my coach taught me and put it to use. I am now a cheerleading coach at a local high school and I try to teach my squad the lessons that Ms. Brown taught me. One important lesson that she taught and I teach as well is that you are a young lady first and first impressions last t a lifetime.

As a little girl, I have always heard stories about my great grandfather Tommy and how much of a gentleman he was. He was known as a “gentleman’s gentleman” and not only dressed the part, but acted the part as well. My great grandmother and he, did not have much money because as history as been told, blacks did not have a lot of money in the early to mid 1900’s. My great grandparents did what they had to do in order to survive, raising six children and a few of their grandchildren as well. They were the perfect couple and one would not expect my great grandfather to leave this world so suddenly.

The story has been told that one summer day, my great grandfather kept telling my great grandmother that he was not feeling well and that he was very tired. The family decided to take him to the doctor. As they were preparing to take him to the doctor, he went and sat on the porch while my uncle attempted to start the car. My uncle tried and tried to get the car to start and unfortunately it would not. While this was going on, my great grandfather suddenly slumped over on the porch. He was pronounced dead and the paramedics said that he had had a heart attack. He lay in state at the family house for a week. My great grandmother temporarily lost her mind as she suddenly was left with the task of raising her family by herself. My great grandmother somehow found the strength to grieve and pick up the pieces and raise her family. As a little girl, I watched her strength and saw how she could handle anything. She taught me that I can face anything and that you have to be strong in adversities.
